Report: After an uneventful search day, on our way to the night position further north, we received a distress call from the MRCC: a rubber boat carrying 130 people, engine failure, adrift within 12 nm of the coast – Libyan territorial waters. The Italian Navy, half a mile from us, refused to enter the territorial waters without Libyan clearance. A MOAS drone confirmed the boat's position and the boat's devastating condition: the starboard tube had already lost air and people were in the water. The IUVENTA headed to the scene – despite lacking the required entry clearance. The other NGO vessels followed. The boat was already sinking, people were drifting in the dark water. In a joint effort, 113 people were rescued and brought aboard the Phoenix. 17 people – among them at least one child – lost their lives.
