The Ministry of Justice Review

In April 2021, following Domani's revelations, Justice Minister Marta Cartabia ordered an assessment of the Trapani prosecutors' office. The Ministry opened a file to "undertake with urgency the necessary preliminary findings," and sent inspectors to Sicily. Press freedom organisations welcomed the move. The Media Freedom Rapid Response coalition, including the International Press Institute, called it vital that the investigation be "conducted in a robust, swift and systematic manner that responds to the severity of the revelations."

What followed was effectively nothing. When the matter was eventually addressed during a parliamentary question time, Cartabia stated that nothing illegitimate had been found — Italian law, she said, does not require that an intercepted person be under investigation themselves. No report was published. No findings were made public. The "urgent preliminary findings" the Ministry had promised in April 2021 simply never surfaced.
