Operation Triton

In late 2014, the EU’s border patrol, FRONTEX, launched Operation Triton. Purportedly a replacement of Mare Nostrum it in fact involved massive divestment from search and rescue, and a shift in focus to border protection and deterrence.

Triton ran on a third of the budget allocated to its predecessor Mare Nostrum. After the mass drowning in April 2015, the budget was tripled and the operational zone expanded. The mandate stayed the same. On February 1, 2018, Triton was replaced by Operation Themis.
